Guest house does not want gays

March 24, 2010

Religious convictions are private matters and should never affect others adversely. So far for my conviction, but not everybody sees it like that. A small guest house near Maidenhead, England refused to accommodate a gay couple because of their sexuality: Michael Black and John Morgan had booked a room by phone, but were turned away on their arrival. The guest house's owner explained that homosexuality offends against her religious convictions, and that therefore only straight guests are welcomed.
Oh God, how sweet is that! As a freedom-loving chicken, I do not want to dictate anything to anyone; as far as I am concerned the owner can accommodate whom she likes. Although it is illegal in England for businesses to discriminate customers on the grounds of sexual orientation, tolerance and acceptance cannot be easily imposed by law. The guest house's owner should just be more honest and tout her homophobia more contentiously. For instance, she could advertise her establishment as the only truly homophobic guest house far and wide; then the gay couple wouldn't have booked a room in the first place. In the end, from a simple economic perspective, the owner is doing herself harm. Homosexual childless couples, also known as DINKS ("Double Income No Kids"), are - at least for most businesses - particularly lucrative customers. She will lose these incomes, but will have saved a place in heaven - at least that's what she thinks!
Unfortunately, we cannot offer you any gay-friendly accommodations in Maidenhead yet, but you can drown your frustration in the two bars we have listed!
