Help, the gays are too close to the subway!

May 13, 2010

It's always absurd under which pretenses politicians are trying to prevent gays from publicly advocating for their rights. In Moscow, queer activists are accused of being Satanists and the Minsk city council prohibits the Slavic Pride because it is too close to a subway station. Yes, there really is a law that prohibits official events if they take place less than 200 meters from a subway station. Too bad that in the past, other - of course, not homosexual! - gatherings were running on the same route as the scheduled Slavic Pride. But maybe the homophobic politicians just want to ensure that the unloved queers cannot flee so easily to the subway should they be made aware of their immoral behavior by decent fellow citizens. Religious fundamentalists, ultra-nationalists or other congenial contemporaries are always looking for an open conversation with dissenters, and the cowardly homos should face that.
However, I can still concede something positive to the politicians. After all, they no longer deny, as they did 10 years ago, that homosexuals even exist in Belarus. To this extent, a little progress has been made. And who knows, perhaps in another 10 years an openly gay politician will demonstrate at the forefront at Slavic Pride? Because I'll bet that even in Belarus there are homosexuals in politics. So, do not be shy and come out - to the streets!
