Beating politicians at Baltic Pride

May 11, 2010

Last Saturday, more than 400 queer activists went to the streets for the Baltic Pride in Vilnius to demonstrate for their rights. The parade had to be shielded by nearly 1,000 police officers in order to prevent clashes with counter-demonstrators. They insulted the parade's participants as "Homo-Nazis". Oh, how intellectually profound and substantial are the arguments of the gay haters. Just to clarify this: yes, there were and are indeed homosexuals among Nazis, but most of them wouldn't describe themselves as "Homo-Nazis". At least, so far I haven't read that, for example, Ernst Röhm ever proudly declared himself a "Homo-Nazi". And that precisely the Nazis, as soon as they are in in power, persecute and kill openly-living homosexuals, should only be mentioned here in passing. But the opponents of the Baltic Pride could compensate for their little rhetorical weakness by throwing bottles, stones and smoke bombs. Two homophobic politicians, however, thought that wasn't enough. They managed to get access to the parade by showing their parliament passes and started to beat participants.
Despite these incidents, Baltic Pride organizers spoke of a success. The fact that the parade were held at all is thanks to the Supreme Court, which recanted a previously enacted ban. Let us hope that the next upcoming queer parades, like the Slavic Pride or the Moscow Pride, will be peaceful and that even counter-demonstrators will soon recognize that diversity is an enrichment and not a threat.
