Parade of the sick in Belgrade
October 12, 2010
"Are you nuts, beating the normal and defending these sick homos!"
With these words, police in Belgrade were insulted last Sunday by disgruntled old ladies. But what exactly happened?
We see the sick homos daring to go on the streets on a regular basis in the Western world. In Belgrade, however, the 'normals' haven't had to bear this sight for 9 years, and the public was naturally concerned that this should change this year.
Therefore, more than 20,000 people protested on Saturday to defend the Serbian nation against the impending Sodom and Gomorrah. But the Serbian flags of patriot and the religious icons of Orthodox believers could not stop the parade of the sick. And so the inevitable happened.
More than 6,000, mostly young hooligans, focused on more effective countermeasures: stones and Molotov cocktails paired with real manpower. However, it didn't come to the open discussion with the nearly 1,000 sick - since they had sought, cowardly as they are, protection by police - and after 15 minutes the parade was already over. But the rioters found equal opponents in the more than 5,000 police officers and fought fierce street battles over several hours. Burning cars, buses and houses, destroyed shops, armored police vehicles, helicopters flying over the city - Belgrade looked as though under wartime siege.
The sad result of this weekend: more than 140 injured, 200 arrests and property damage of around 1 million euros. Let's hope that the political leaders will allow another Gay Pride next year and ensure the protection of the participants. I'll keep you posted!
