Homos in the Hindu Kush

December 23, 2010

Afghanistan is certainly not the most popular destination in the queer community. But soon a few openly gay men and lesbians will go there, even if only temporarily. As members of the U.S. armed forces they will help to liberate the Afghan people from terrorists - in their field packs they have, of course, also peace, freedom, and democracy. And for these Western values, the openly gay are now officially allowed to fight for in the Hindu Kush.
Yesterday, U.S. President Barack Obama signed a law ending the incumbent "DADT" policy. Since 1993, "Don't ask, don't tell" was the U.S. Army's motto regarding gays in the military. This meant that only closeted gays were allowed to serve, on pain of being sacked. In the last 17 years, more than 14,000 gays had to quit their service because they came out or were outed.
In the past months, the abolition of the discretion policy caused a fierce political struggle which various courts were called on to arbitrate. But with Obama's signature, lesbians and gays in the U.S. Army may soon be completely candid about their sexuality. Soon, because first of all preparations for the integration of gays must be taken, and President Obama and the Defense Secretary Robert Gates must assure Congress that the effectiveness of the forces will not be harmed by outed soldiers. In the meantime, lesbian soldiers could still be converted through rape by their male combatants. Or rumor may have it that gay soldiers were responsible for mass murder in Srebrenica.
A few uncertainties still remain, such that the queer fighters should prefer to remain under cover. Whether the homos in the Hindu Kush will soon be holding the inaugural Afghan Gay Pride is also in doubt, but we will let you know. Until then, I wish you all a peaceful time!
